Star Group Veterans Helping Veterans has hosted the Purple Heart Memorial Wall at their annual Picnic for the past couple of years.

Jonathan Haywood, president of Star Group-Veterans Helping Veterans, said the procession has been held the last two years. It was under a police escort last year and no one else was allowed to be in the procession.  This year, SG-VHV got approval by TX DOT and the city of Copperas Cove Police Department for a full motorcade escort.  The Texas Department of Transportation and the city approved the permits, and the Copperas Cove Police Department escorted the procession and blocked the streets which allow the group to escort the wall to the Civic Center to pre-stage the wall for the Star Group Veteran Helping Veterans 8th Annual Independence Day Picnic.

Organizers said they treated the wall with total honor, in order to give those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in support of a grateful nation, the respect they deserved.

“I think it’s important to the community that our soldiers are not forgotten,” Jonathan Haywood said, adding that people should always continue to keep the soldiers and their families in their prayers.

Star Group Veterans Helping Veterans thanks John Footman and Charles Williams of the Purple Heart Association in Harker Heights for their help in allowing SG-VHV to display the wall at their event.

Organizers encouraged all SG-VHV members, families and friends to attend and pay tribute and respect as a kick-off to a weekend of remembrance for all of the fallen comrades and to celebrate the Independence Day celebration Saturday.

The lineup area started at Patriot and Constitution Street (up from the Cove Theater) and was between 1 and 2:30 p.m..  The SG-VHV family and friends showed their ultimate support with so many vehicles and was privileged to have the Combat Vet Motorcycle Club lead the procession.  People were waving flags and standing proud as the procession travelled toward the Civic Center to be displayed.

SG-VHV was proud of the turn out and the community participation.  Mr John Footman was overwhelmed at the support and preparedness that Star Group Veterans had put into this Event.  He stated he'd never seen a procession like that for the Purple Heart Wall and he was proud to bring it to the Star Group Picnic.
